After building a couple of cabins in the area Ed Clark had his mind on expansion ideas.  He had been taking flying lessons in Gananoque from Doug Wagner since after the war.  Sometime later Doug got a chance to go to the Kingston Flying Club as Manager and asked Ed to buy Gananoque Air Services from him, which he did.  Ed worked to get his commercial and instructors license as he carried on his work at the airport running a flight school for a number of years while at the same time still helping his father race horses and raise cattle.

Then in 1953 Ed bought the farm from his father and built more cabins while he continued to run the flight school.  But by 1959 it was apparent to him that there was a lot more boating activity around Gananoque, and boaters didn’t have enough spots to keep their boats. So one day after contemplating the marina business, Brome Folks and Jack Barrett came up to him and asked if he would build a boat house for them to use.

“Well that put the bee in my bonnet and I wanted to do something different so I went to Kemptville to see some used construction equipment and I had seen what somebody else had done around Peterborough making boat slips.  In fact I went up a couple of times, north of Peterborough.  There were a lot of marinas up there and I finally bought a TBow backhoe, very small, and I tried to dig a canal.” – Ed Clark

At this point Ed was still doing quite a bit of flying, specifically the Trans-Northern Pipeline contract and some charter work.

Nevertheless, with his experience in the motel and tourism industry, Ed saw the great potential that the Thousand Islands would soon have in the future, becoming one of the world’s best boating destinations.  Driven by ingenuity and imagination Ed started his marina, becoming even more of a pioneer and legend in the area. Ed’s son Bruce later joined the company in 1972, expanding the marina’s storage capacity from 40 slips back then to over 160 slips today.  Clark’s Marina has more recently entered into it’s third generation of family operation with Andy and Mike Clark (Bruce’s Sons) now managing much of the daily operations.

The Clark’s family-friendly nature and dependable reputation are deep kindred traits that continue to drive Clark’s Marina.
