About Aviva Canada

Our story

A legacy of trust

Aviva Canada is one of the leading property and casualty insurance groups in the country, providing home, automobile, lifestyle, and business insurance to 2.5 million customers coast to coast. A subsidiary of UK-based Aviva plc, we have the financial strength, scale and are a trusted insurance provider globally for more than 325 years.

Our heritage

Proudly Canadian, globally connected

From 17th century England to present day, Aviva Canada evolved from the creation of new companies and a series of mergers.

Through our evolution, we’ve always provided customers with peace of mind while maintaining a vision of being a trusted and valued home, auto and business insurer.

Aviva’s roots in Canada can be traced back to the early 19th century. In 1835, the first Canadian-based Aviva heritage company — Canada Accident Assurance Company — was incorporated, followed by the incorporation of The General Accident Assurance Company of Canada in 1906.

During the 20th century, many Aviva predecessors emerged, changed their names, combined their strengths, merged and finally – on May 5, 2003 – CGU Insurance Company of Canada changed its name to Aviva Insurance Company of Canada.
