Page: 3 - Kingston to Gananoque – Canadian Middle Channel

This route is the most direct route and avoids shipping traffic – at least until you get past Rockport.

Your starting point for this trip is Point Frederick Shoal, close aboard the KH2 marker. From here you will head roughly east in good water making your way past the light on Cedar Island to marker H43, marking Bayfield Shoal.

Beyond this shoal you will head between Wolfe Island and Howe Island. The channel splits here with the northerly route, the Bateaux Channel, running north of Howe Island and the southerly route heading south of Howe Island.Take the southerly route.

Aubrey Island Watch for marker H42,delineating the end of The Spectacles Shoal,as you turn slightly to pass between the two islands. This shoal runs right to the tip of Howe Island.  Beyond this, watch for H39.  There is a narrow gap here between Cold bath Shoal to the south and Hickeys Point on Howe Island.

Pay attention as you near the end of Howe Island. While there is generally good water through this section, Markers H34 and H35 will put you in line for the narrower passage through a group of upcoming islands.

Ahead,New York State lies on your starboard and the Canadian island known as Leek Island (formerly Cedar IslandThwartway) will be on your port. Part of St Lawrence Islands National Park, mooring cans are maintained in the bay on the south end of the island. Other boaters crowd in here to anchor. Sometimes, especially in the day, you will also see boaters anchored along the northeast shore as they swim. This shore is exposed to storm winds from the east and the northeast. If you anchor here overnight, be sure you are well stuck and the weather is going to be good as the area is surrounded by rocks.

For the most southerly route you will follow the channel marked by the markers JE17 and JE18. JE15 and JE16 follow as the channel narrows.

It is important to remember which side the Red markers are on as you pass through this area in this direction since it becomes vitally important after you pass the Green JE13.The channel swings sharply to starboard so the Red JE12 passes on your port side. A mistake here could be costly.
